We spend 80% of our lives at work, and if you are not in a job you like or love then it is going to have an effect on other parts of your life. It’s inevitable, it’s how we as humans functions. Now we are not saying quit your job, take out a loan and just wait for a dream job to find you. We do however have some super tips on how to find the job of your dreams (and be the friend who seems you have it all).
The weird thing about finding a job is that even though technology has changed the world a few times, the way in which we hunt for jobs is still the same as it has been since like the 1970s. We hunt job sites, we call recruitment specialists, we put together a CV that shows all the things we have achieved. The reality is that there are so many ingenious and unconventional ways of getting noticed amongst the pile of people applying to work at dream companies like Nike, Red Bull or Airbnb who are offering the “the dream job” that will make your life that much happier.
Dr. Seuss, said it best and the same can be said for applying for a job, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”
Here are some of the unconventional ideas that can help you get that new job and make the changes that you want to improve your life (so you don’t have to resort to drastic measures lie take out a loan, or sell your car to make rent):
Constantly upskill yourself
Master your profession. It seems like an obvious thing to do, but you would be surprised to see how many people just know the basic information and never really take the time to constantly upskill themselves. This is particularly true when people reach managerial level, they no longer have to know how to do the “day to day” task because they have people who they have hired to keep the company running while they oversee things. Having skills will always win in an interview situation, you may be the most likable person in the world with enough charisma to share but if you don’t have the skills to back it up, you are not getting the job.
Don’t rely on your CV… too much
Summarising what you have done onto one or two pieces of paper is an archaic way of doing things, but the reason people do it is for the simple reason that we have all been doing it that way for a long time. The best way to show people what you have accomplished in your career is by doing exactly that, showing them. Create a portfolio that shows the work you are most proud of and the results you have achieved (people love to see good results and love results-driven people). A great way to put together a portfolio of work is through websites like Wix, who offer great templates that are easy to edit. Sharing a website is immediately more impressive than sharing a PDF, don’t you think? We do.
Focus less on money
Jen Welter famously said, “If you want to be successful in this world, you have to follow your passion, not your paycheck”. It’s a scary thing to think, but if you are really good at what you do there will be a company out there willing to pay for it, and it will find you. Find the work that makes your heart skip a beat when it works out, that gets you excited about starting the day because it’s a cliche but if you love what you do you will do better work. If you are always hunting for more money, a bigger more impressive title you will never really feel completely satisfied and fulfilled. Do what you want and love what you do, and the money will come, and you will never have to take out a loan like we mentioned earlier.
Keep your day job, for now
There are 24 hours in a day and anyone who has a full-time job has to commit roughly 8 hours of that day to their job, however, the time before and after work is yours to do with as you please, use it and use it wisely. Build up your portfolio, perfect your skills, study something that helps your future career. It doesn’t matter what your dream job is or if your dreams are of owning your own business. You are never too old to learn and you should never act like you know everything. The time after work could also be used to start building up a small customer base that will allow you to have some financial stability so you don’t have to take out personal loans when you do make the step towards opening your own business if that is your ultimate dream job.
Network with people
The longer you have been working, more often than not you will find out that the really good jobs, the one you are dying to have but are never listed on jobs sites. They are mentioned in coffee meetings, over specialised Facebook groups and in general conversation between industry thought leaders. In order to know the people who are having the right conversations, you need to be a part of the right conversations. Networking and knowing the right circles and the right people in the right circles doesn’t happen overnight. Start with going to some industry events, following some people tweeting about a certain thing on Twitter and take it from there.
Have realistic expectations
When you do get your dream job, it may not be everything that you expected prepare yourself for that. It takes time to settle in, understand how things are done, how new colleagues work and that comes with frustrations. Dream job does not mean cushy job. It was hard work to get the job of your dreams and it will be hard work to keep it. As with any job, not every day is all sunshine and roses. You need to be prepared for there being personalities that you clash with or certain tasks that you hate but have to complete. It’s all a part of the puzzle that makes the company you have dreamed of getting your job at the well-oiled machine that it is.
Now that we have shared some awesome tips with you to get the job of your dreams, it is up to you to put in the time and the effort required to be the best in the business. Work hard, stay humble and do things that you are proud to have your name attached to and you will be well on your way to having that job of your dreams, sail into your inbox.
